CO2 is heavier than air and acts as an asphyxiant. A CO2 pipeline leak would pose a serious threat to Bismarck residents, especially in low-lying areas near the Missouri River.
CO2 pipelines, unlike natural gas pipelines, do not use odorants, making leak detection challenging and potentially more dangerous.
Operating at a high pressure PSI (pounds per square inch), a CO2 pipeline is susceptible to significant ruptures, leading to rapid and widespread CO2 dispersal.
Current measures for detecting and responding to CO2 leaks are inadequate, creating a critical need for new emergency action plans, updated equipment and community education.
